"Most GMT watches fall in the sports watch category. However, those who genuinely desire the GMT complication are business travelers. I wanted to incorporate tradition while at the same time reflect a sense of coordinated modernity. With this in mind, the Kurono GMT 1 is designed to complement the cuffs of the globetrotting executive in an intellectual manner." ~ Hajime Asaoka.

Introducing the new limited

Kurono GMT 1

Kurono Tokyo is proud to present our first world-time complication - the Kurono GMT 1 - a new novelty and design study by master Japanese watchmaker Hajime Asaoka.

The new Kurono GMT 1 imbues Hajime Asaoka's strong art-deco design language coordinated with intelligent gentility. Hajime Asaoka set out to design a watch for the business traveler that would coordinate with boardroom business attire, but yet retain a sense of understated sportiness.

The Kurono GMT 1 is a true GMT watch that has been nominated as a finalist for the 2023 Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève Awards under the 'Challenge' category.

Kurono GMT 1 with travel documentation

"Business fashion remains conservative, with fine haberdashery trends in suits and shoes seeing only minute changes through the decades. Kurono Tokyo contemplates designs that incorporate tradition with a heightened awareness of the contemporary, particularly in coordinating timepiece styles that transcend trends. Specifically, by designing a dial with a restrained diameter of 38mm, Kurono seeks the beauty and elegance of a watch that naturally fits under-the-cuff."

true gmt

The complication adopted for the GMT 1 is a "True GMT," where instead of adjusting the 24-hour hand, the local hour hand can be independently adjusted in one-hour increments forward and backward, with date changes up or down in tow. This enables quick responses when there is a need to change time zones.

The addition of the bi-directional bezel allows for a myriad of possible timekeeping uses apart from a third-time zone. Furthermore, considering durability, this rotating bezel has been carefully chosen to be clickless with a specific tension for ease of usage.

CONSTRUCTION

The Kurono GMT 1 retains the curved Kurono 38mm high-polish case with the addition of the glazed bi-directional rotating bezel. It features lacquer-filled 24-hour markers, as well as the now iconic art-deco concentric lines that serve as a day-night indicator. Thematic coordination is brought to the dial via contrasting black, gray, and crimson dial rings - each demarcating the various time and time-zone functions of the watch.

The combination of high-polish leaf hands for the hour and minute hands with modern hands is a typical Kurono design. The hour and minute hands are curved at both ends, and are paired with a counterweighted second hand that is very thin. The tips of the second and minute hands are bent by hand. A 24 hour arrow hand is in red filled with superluminova.
